If you're looking for a 5.1 PC setup then you have more then enough options. Almost every multimedia speaker maker has an offering, and some of them are quite affordable.

You can also find a suitable sound card for next to nothing. However, if you want to make the jump up to 6.1 then you will find fewer options. For a sound card you can pick up a Hercules 7.1 model, backward compatible of course, for under $40.00. Lenovo X230 Recovery Disc there. You can also make a bit more of an investment and opt for the outstanding Audigy 2. (No matter which configuration you order you get the same base 6.1 card.) Speakers are a whole different game.

Unfortunately, most companies max out at 5.1. The only high-end 6.1 system is the Creative MegaWorks rig, which, as impressive as it is, will leave a rather large dent in your wallet. These conditions made it smart for Creative to release the Inspire 6.1 6600 speakers as quickly as possible. They were in fact launched before the MegaWorks, which was smart on the company's part.

(High-end equipment might be fun to drool over but much more money is made on 'entry level' rigs.) Creative continues to push 6.1 very aggressively. If you are considering an Audigy 2 then be sure to check out some of the attractive bundles with the MegaWorks. The Inspire 6.1 6600 speakers are not perfect speakers but they do a few things extremely well and are priced very competitively. If you are looking to jump to 6.1 but have a limited bankroll, then the Inspires deserve an audition. At a hair under $100.00 they offer tremendous value.

However, if you're picky about sound the speakers might disappoint you. They perform acceptable well in some areas, but a few serious sonic problems blemish the overall package. These problems would be much more off-putting if not for the fantastic price. In terms of design, the Inspires are pretty no nonsense.

The system consists of six identical satellites, a sub woofer, and a wired remote control. The satellites have angled bottoms and they naturally sit pitched a good bit upward by themselves. You'll find small stands on which you can mount the satellites for a different angle. Similarly, a special stand allows you to adjust the angle of the center channel. The front center channel gets 20 watts RMS and each of the others gets 8 watts RMS. The sub, which is equipped with a 6.5-inch driver, pumps out 22 watts RMS. This makes for a total of 100 watts RMS.

While this isn't earth-shaking it is powerful enough to fill a bedroom or dorm room with clear sound. Many contemporary systems are outfitted with absurdly powerful amps, but Creative had to keep the cost down somehow.

The amp could be a little more robust, but I think it's a fair value considering the attractive price. The sub houses the amp and all of the inputs and outputs. Creative went for the traditional 6.1 analog inputs. The rear center channel is routed on the same channel as the center and sub.

The analog configuration is the most common and the easiest to install, so it makes sense that Creative wouldn't opt for anything else. Next to the inputs and outputs you will also find a small upmix switch. This allows you to turn a 5.1 signal into 6.1 sound. In this mode the rear center is simply a combination of sounds from the surround channels. Simple but effective, I still don't understand why Creative didn't throw this feature into the MegaWorks.
